This chapter explores the symbiotic relationship between international law and water diplomacy, emphasizing their role in promoting peace and security in the governance of shared water resources. The author examines the key legal principles that underpin interstate cooperation, including the principles of equitable and reasonable utilization and the obligation not to cause significant harm. Particular attention is given to procedural cooperation mechanisms, such as regular data exchange and prior notification of planned activities on transboundary watercourses. The chapter highlights the importance of joint institutions in fostering trust, facilitating professional dialogue, and strengthening cooperation among neighboring states. To prevent and resolve disputes, international law provides a broad range of mechanisms, from diplomatic consultations to arbitration and judicial settlement. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for the continuous development and adaptation of legal frameworks to effectively address emerging environmental challenges and the impacts of climate change.
