River Basin Organizations in Water Diplomacy explores the role of River Basin Organizations (RBOs) in preventing and resolving conflicts related to transboundary water resources. Through a comparative analysis of international river basins, the book examines how institutional mechanisms, legal frameworks, and diplomatic tools promote cooperation among states and support the sustainable management of shared water resources.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of River Basin Organizations (RBOs) in water diplomacy and transboundary water governance. The authors argue that, despite the existence of numerous disputes over shared water resources, states are generally more inclined to address these challenges through cooperation rather than conflict. International river basin organizations are presented as key mechanisms for facilitating such cooperation.

The volume develops a conceptual framework linking water management, water cooperation, and water diplomacy. Particular attention is given to how legal arrangements, institutional structures, technical mechanisms, and strategic planning contribute to conflict prevention, dispute resolution, and regional stability. The book demonstrates that effective water diplomacy depends not only on political will but also on the capacity of institutions to facilitate dialogue, generate shared knowledge, and promote mutually beneficial outcomes.

The book includes comparative case studies from major international river basins across the world, including the Great Lakes, Columbia, Colorado, Senegal, Niger, Nile, Congo, Jordan, Helmand, Aral Sea, Mekong, Danube, and Rhine basins. These cases illustrate different approaches to transboundary cooperation and highlight the factors that influence the effectiveness of international water institutions.

This publication is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the fields of international relations, water diplomacy, environmental governance, sustainable development, and transboundary water management. It offers both theoretical insights and practical lessons for strengthening cooperation and promoting peace through the shared management of water resources.
